July 4th Celebration

Come celebrate July 4th in Ashland at Hanover Arts and Activities Center (500 South Center Street, Ashland)! If you have any questions about activities, please call 804-798-2728.

bulletUsed Book Sale - The Friends of the Ashland Library's Used Book Sale begins at 9:00 AM inside at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center (500 S. Center Street, Ashland, VA  23005).  There are no other July 4th activities besides the Used Book Sale until the parade begins at 11:00 a.m.

bulletParade - If you would like to be a participant in the July 4th parade, the parade line-up begins at 10:00 AM at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Henry Clay Road.  Our non-motorized parade begins at 11:00 AM and continues down the road bordering the railroad tracks, arriving at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center at ~11:30 AM.  If you would like to participate in the parade by joining an existing brigade or if you would like to form your own brigade in the parade, please contact Carolyn Peart at 804-798-9131.  If you would like to enjoy watching the parade passing by, you can line the railroad tracks on Railroad Avenue/S. Center Street between Henry Clay Road and Cox Lane.

bulletApple Pie Contest - Pies must be homemade with filling being primarily apple.  Additions such as nuts, spices, raising, etc. are allowed.  Pies must be submitted to the Hanover Arts and Activities Center between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM, accompanied by an  apple pie registration form.  To print an apple pie registration form, click here.  A panel of judges will judge the pies, and the winning pies will be auctioned off, with remaining pies sold by the slice.  All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Hanover Arts and Activities Center.

bulletMusic, food, fun and games - After the parade is over, you will hear the Hanover Concert Band's patriotic concert at noon and other wonderful music, followed by our Apple Pie contest and auction at 12:30. Results of the Patriotic Art show will also be announced at that time.  There will be old-fashioned lawn games such as watermelon seed spitting; a patriotic art show; food and carriage rides (fee); and crafts.

bulletWhat to bring -  Bring a blanket and/or lawn chair.  You can also pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the lawn or you can purchase food from several local vendors.

bulletThe Patriotic Art Show is a great way to show pride for your country.  All artwork must be on paper (minimum paper size 8 1/2 by 11 inches; maximum paper size is standard posterboard) - feel free to use any medium (pencil, pastel, crayon, paint, etc). Please put your name, age and phone number on the back of your artwork. Turn it in by July 2nd to the Hanover Arts and Activities Center or turn it in at the Ashland Library in the special Patriotic Art Show box at the Ashland Library.  All artwork will be put on display during our festivities on July 4th at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center.  Winners will be announced at the 4th of July Celebration after the parade. You do not need to be present to win.  Art will be available for pick up the week of July 7-11 at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center.  Some ideas for your artwork are American symbols, heroes and red white and blue as your inspiration.
